Once the biggest hotel in Japan, it was modelled on French Baroque architecture. It was built in 1963 when it was harder for Japanese tourists to travel outsideof the country. Hachijojima was advertised as ‘the Hawaii of Japan’ and was extremely popular until it became easier for individuals to travel to cheaper holiday destinations like Thailand. The hotel reopened a few times under another name but finally closed its doors in 2006.
